BOARD INVOLVEMENT
Working in the non-profit arena, I know how important it is to have extra hands on deck to further an idea into a successful reality. I have been so grateful for the volunteers and interns who helped me with various projects, I knew that I needed to share my talent and drive by volunteering on local boards.
I have always had a passion for localism. It started with working at a local cooperative grocery store, Bloomingfoods for many years. There I learned the importance of having a sustained local economy, which helps support a diverse community culture. Joining the Local First Bloomington board aloud me to use my skills to support Bloomington’s local industry by creating fun programming, creating a supportive bridge between local businesses, and aid in dismantling barriers for these businesses.
Serving on the Monroe County Extension Board was great opportunity to work with many influential community members and a means to get perspective on county needs. Being on this board was also a way for me to continue my love for exploring how outdoor spaces can be an opportunity for engage and teach people of all ages and backgrounds.
Each of these experiences were challenging in their own way, but also provided deep insight into the Bloomington/Monroe County community. My museum skills easily transferred into each of these boards and also provided a perspective that was missing, like understanding your target audience and engaging sustained stakeholders.
Local First Bloomington
2013 – 2017
Local First Bloomington was a non-profit organization committed to supporting and promoting locally owned, independent business. Local First Bloomington was a support network and cheerleader for local businesses since 2009. Bloomington is a vibrant community with a local character appreciated by long-time residents, students, and visitors. And vital local businesses are at the center of that character.
We supported our mission though educating the public on the benefits of purchasing local, facilitating collaboration between businesses, and engaged in outreach in order to create a more economically and environmentally sustainable local community, while preserving its unique local character.
The LFB board was a working board. We all participated, using our own strengths and expertise to fulfill the mission. My role was the Development and Outreach Co-Chair and Treasurer. I assist in creating programs, workshops, and events for members. I also assisted in layout of the shopping guide and other promotional materials.
